Description

Layout and arrangement of the buildings

The National Bank of Belgium has decided to build a new highly secured building for management, treatment and storage of bank notes as well as the storage of coins.

Located in Zellik, at the angle with the Relegemstraat, Serge Ecksteinlaan and Schapenbaan, the building site of 3.7 ha was previously used as warehouses.

In regard to its activities, the building site is particularly well protected along its periphery.

The layout of the building is determined by the protection issues and to optimize the flows of material inside the building.

The built area includes three buildings:

  • An administrative building (“support core”) of two levels, located along the Schapenbaan. It includes offices, meeting rooms and company restaurant.
  • A highly secured single level industrial building (“secure core”), located at the centre of the building site and intended for the treatment and storage of the money.
  • A truck scan building, located alongside Relegemsestraat.

The rectangular shape of the “secure-core” is determined by the logistics studies to maximise the effectiveness of the ASRS cranes (Automated Storage and Retrieval System).

The “secure-core” is surrounded on three sides by an ecological pond and the fourth side by the manoeuvring yard for the trucks. The water body offers a pleasant view from offices and living areas of the administrative building.

During summer, the water body is also a source of natural cooling.

For safety reasons, the “secure core” has minimal openings. The administrative building, on the contrary, is largely glazed.

In the “support core” staff working and living areas are opened to the north while offering a magnificent view of the water body towards the south, through a courtyard protected by a large perforated metal shield.

Solar panels and a geothermal installation ensure the energy independence of the buildings. Sustainable construction (including grey energy) is a priority, especially with wood and perforated sheet metal facades, technologies that are both environmentally and economically sustainable.

Accesses

The number of entries are reduced:

  • Western access, from Relegemsestraat, restricted to cash carriers;
  • Northern access, from the Schapenbaan, restricted to the staff, visitors and suppliers.

At the northern access, the manoeuvre area for the logistics lorries extends to the north-east side, the visitors’ car park is located in the centre and the staff parking area is on the north-west side. Electric charging points are provided.

A bicycle shelter is located near the administration building entrance.
