In the heart of the Leopold district, Eugène Delatte
and Fernand Steppé built the headquarters of the
Groupement des Hauts-Fourneaux et Aciéries Belges
between 1953 and 1955. It was located near the
twin towers built by Jean-Jules Eggericx and Raphaël
Verwilghen in 1934–1937. The goal of the various
versions of the new design by Philippe Samyn (includ-
ing one that allowed the original structures to show
through) was to give a new and varied relief to the
facades, while at the same time creating a modulation
of movable, living screens and prioritising the use of
natural light. The perforated stainless steel panels on
the facade act as mirrors for the diffuse northern light.
