The interior and exterior reconstruction of this institute
for higher education, located in a central and diverse
area of Brussels, required an intervention that was both
clean and discreet. Standing between standard Art
Deco-style buildings and modest residential buildings,
both neoclassical and eclectic in appearance, the exist-
ing building had an uninspiring three-part frame (glazed
central sections, basement windows and transoms
on sandwich panels). The new facades designed by
Philippe Samyn and the interior work rationalised the use
of the spaces and introduced modulated natural light.
As in other projects, and with a concern for sustainable
development that includes even reinforced concrete
structures, the demolition of the existing edifices (includ-
ing partitions and cladding) was kept to a minimum.
