SUPERMARKET PROTOTYPE
FOR DELHAIZE
/ HALLE (FLEMISH BRABANT PROVINCE)
/ 2000
As we have seen in other projects, the cylindrical shape
is proposed here for its ability to adapt to any environ-
ment and any shaped plot of land, whether inside or
outside of the city. Like other locations, the suburbs of
the small, ancient city of Halle, located in the far-flung
outskirts of Brussels and bisected by the River Senne,
welcome this type of infrastructure which, in this
form, complements surrounding housing, industry and
shops, and can be built with sustainable development
techniques. According to the architect, this project will
allow users to reconnect with the concept of a market
and what makes it ‘super’. The layout of the main build-
ing consists of a ring of office premises surrounding
a vast, circular sales area, in the middle of which is a
piazzetta. Parking is located beneath the structure. Both
the buildings and the underground parking areas benefit
from natural lighting and ventilation. The Samyn offices
have worked on template projects on several occasions,
whether in connection with metro entrances
(01-472)
or motorway service areas
(01-476
, both not included
in the anthology
)
.
