PROJECT TO RECONSTRUCT
THE RENAULT FACTORY
/ VILVOORDE
(FLEMISH BRABANT PROVINCE)
/ 1985
Shortly before the outbreak of the conflicts that
would make Renault-Vilvoorde a symbol of the labour
struggles in Belgium, a competition was organised to
renovate the site’s facades and workshops. Located in
an industrial zone alongside a motorway and close to
the centre of a small town near Brussels, the Renault
workshops were in need of a new image. The arrange-
ment of the double facade designed by Philippe Samyn
was based on an amusing version of the Renault logo.
The project mainly addressed the problem of flow of
employees to their workstations, which corrected a pro-
duction line that was almost exclusively focused on the
flow of cars and parts. The building is partially located
beneath the Vilvoorde viaduct, part of the Brussels ring
road, which was designed by the Bagon design office.
