OFFICE AND RESIDENTIAL
PROJECT FOR SIEMENS
/ SCHAERBEEK (BRUSSELS)
/ 1992–1993
The project is based on a strong town-planning concept. It is located on
a long, narrow strip of land between a slip road to the Liège motorway
and the new broadcasting facilities along the boulevard Reyers. The
residential units, consisting of small parallel buildings separated by gar-
dens and squares, are located in the quietest zone at the rear, towards
the broadcasting complex. The offices are built along the motorway in a
continuous structure, 316 metres long, which includes a ‘toothed’ block,
a rotunda and a square building with a large patio. In the urban planning
project proposed by Philippe Samyn, this set of offices is extended
towards the boulevard. A private, speed-limited (30 km/h) road, lined
with trees and running parallel to the motorway, provides access. The
traffic on rue Colonel Bourg is eliminated, while a ramp allows trucks
of up to 32 tonnes to reach underground levels without disturbing the
occupants. The entrance is marked by a heavily glazed cylindrical edifice
about two-thirds along the structure.
