a bridge are the same whether it is in Helsinki or
Lisbon, and yet they do not look alike. For Samyn,
engineering does not make sense without an under-
standing of the philosophical background within which
one is working. As a member of the Royal Academy of
Science, Letters and Arts of Belgium, Philippe Samyn
does his best to encourage more connections with
Seco, particularly on the issue of sustainable construc-
tion. He proposed the idea that the two academies
(the Koninklijke Vlaamse Academie van België voor
Wetenschappen en Kunsten and its French-speaking
counterpart) work together on the philosophical and cul-
tural base of sustainable construction, in order to clarify
its contents prior to the creation of a scientific and tech-
nical system of reference. Hervé Hasquin, permanent
secretary of the French-speaking Academy, immediately
and enthusiastically put this into effect.
