Car park for
GlaxoSmithKline
/ wavre
(Walloon Brabant province)
/ 2007 / in progress
The highly geometric design of these three cylindrical
staggered car parks and their interconnection is the
result of Philippe Samyn’s typological research in the
area of landscape development of motorway rest areas,
as well as his earlier proposals for the parking ‘ring’
for the same company
(01-334)
. The project’s basic
principle consists of eliminating dead ends. The three
cylinders – measuring respectively 95, 74 and
54 metres in diameter – are made of fire-resistant
wooden planks placed on a grid of steel beams and col-
umns positioned every 5 metres on textile foundations.
The entire complex is extremely light and can be fully
disassembled. The lower levels of the smallest cylinder
provide visitor parking for 200 cars with the remaining
2,600 spaces for staff.
