Project for
a retirement home
/ Sint-Genesius-Rode
(Flemish Brabant province)
/ 2007 / in progress
A truly village-like structure is created here for eighty-
eight residents grouped into small fourteen-room
units. This has been fitted between the site’s existing
buildings. The spatial layout is such that the majority of
interior views are broken up, fostering a sensation of pri-
vacy and creating small communal meeting places. The
facades are highly insulated like the existing renovated
buildings, and are clad in a patchwork of 25,000 small
multi-ply panels. These are decorated by the residents,
the children and the inhabitants of Sint-Genesius-Rode,
under the artistic direction of Carine Fol, who special-
ises in the study and encouragement of spontaneous
artistic expression. An interior garden and landscaping
attentive to the existing garden provides a link between
the various parts of the complex. This project can be
compared with that of Neder-over-Heembeek
