Still, Philippe Samyn went to the drawing board once more later on. In the last
preliminary design, due to the modified boundary conditions and the relocation
of the project, the bridge was presented as an arch bridge, seamlessly integrated
into its surroundings, but eye-catching because of its formal dialogue with the new
Leuven station platform covering. The single arch with wind-resistant braces rests
on slender concrete support points instead of massive bridge abutments. The
bridge separates pedestrians from bike traffic, which enhances safety. If needed
or desired, the bridge can be fitted with a cover, preferably a glass one.

The iron river is bridged in three separate places: the tunnel which runs under the
railway tracks, according to the master plan of Marcel Smets, following a design
of I. De Solà-Morales, the new pedestrian and bicycle bridge being above the tracks
at the level of the platform covering, and the new footbridge at the Provinciehuis
building.
