Opening of the applications stage 1: October 15th, 1999.
Proclamation of the results stage 1: November 24th, 1999.
Opening of the applications stage 2: March 3rd, 2000.
Final meeting of the jury stage 2: March 27th, 2000.
Proclamation of the results stage 2: April 4th, 2000.
Eighteen teams entered the first stage, ranging from small yet promising firms
with a finely tuned interpretation of the urban environment to large offices with
impressive files.
Six participants were ultimately selected to present the jury their designs varying in
nuance and approach: Calatrava Valls (E); Tijdelijke vereniging De Smet Vermeulen
/S.W.K. ingenieurs (B); Nicholas Grimshaw and Partners (UK); Lucher-Beau-Rivage
(CH); Richard Rogers Partnership (UK) with Bureau Van Kerckhove (engineers and
architects) (B); Philippe Samyn and Partners (B).
Composition of the jury
Members entitled to vote:
Mr. Louis Tobback (mayor of the city of Leuven, chairman of the jury), Mr. Bart
Massart (councillor of land management, preservation of monuments, and
small and medium enterprises of the city of Leuven), Mr. Tony Van den Berghen
(district manager, NMBS), Mr. Albert Covemaeker (head engineer - department
head, NMBS), Mr. bOb Van Reeth (Master Builder of Flanders), Mr. René Greisch
(professor engineer with Bureau d’études Greisch), Mr. André Loeckx (professor at
K.U. Leuven), Mr. Marcel Smets (professor at K.U. Leuven) and Mr. Rudy Uytenhaak
(architect engineer with Architectenbureau Uytenhaak).
Observers:
