4.5 The nails.
The pointed tips at the narrow ends of the covering are made out of expanded steel
sheet. This material filters the strong winds common in the railway environment. It
also breaks the pressure wave caused by a passing train.
The prefabricated galvanised panels in expanded steel sheet are fixed to the load
bearing structure. The expanded steel sheet has the following characteristics: lens-
shaped mesh 200 x 80 mm; strips 30 mm wide, thickness of the steel 3 mm. The
panels are secured with stainless steel screws and washers. Utmost care is taken
in aligning all the connection points of all the prefabricated panels. The vertical and
horizontal forces are entirely transferred to the load bearing structure. The joints
and seams allow for deformations in the bearing structure caused by variations in
temperature, setting of the building, and creep of concrete.
