the production of heating and cooling
In cold weather, heat is produced at low temperature (max. 40°C) by a 212 kW heat pump connected to an array of 42 geothermal boreholes. A 290 kW gas-powered condensing boiler supplies any necessary extra heat. hot water for the kitchen and changing-room showers is produced via a separate gas- red generator.
The cold produced by the heat pump during the heating season (156 kW) is either stored in the ground or can be used to cool cer- tain parts of the building (the server room, meeting rooms, etc.). In hot weather everything is done to produce ‘free cooling’8 using an air condenser (238 kW) located in the car-park courtyard and the geothermal boreholes (50 kW). By default, cold air is produced by the four compressors of the heat pump connected to the air condenser.
electricity generation by photovoltaic panels
To offset the primary energy consumed by the technical installa- tions, the building’s roof is covered with photovoltaic panels with a capacity of 217.5 kWp9 made up of 10 inverters and 870 south- facing panels inclined at 15° to the horizontal.

Solar gains and any dazzling of the of ce workers are limited by automatically operated external blinds on each facade.
Each facade is tted with screen-printed glass louvres automati- cally set dependent on the position of the sun (height and azimuth) and the level of natural light measured on the roof.
In the patios, bamboo blinds are tted, again automatically set dependent on the level of outside light. The opening and tilt of
the louvres are controlled by the arti cial lighting control unit with a view to limiting solar gain in the of ces while ensuring suf cient natural light. The intensity of arti cial lighting (max. 450 lux) in the of ces is controlled by a central control unit, taking account of the position of the blinds and the tilt of the louvres.
Switching lights on is controlled on a zone-by-zone basis using
RF push buttons in the of ces (one detector for each 4-workplace desk or for each partitioned-off of ce), while lights are switched off automatically when no presence is detected in the relevant zone.
