the principle of the free expansion of the structure was also applied in the previ- ous aGC of ce (the Glaverbel Building) in Brussels. In this ring-shaped build- ing the ve oor plates, supported on columns and beams, were allowed to expand outwards.the hori- zontal forces were absorbed in full concrete panels that were placed tangentially in the ring. as a result of the torsion forces generated in the circular facade beams, a number of tears were noted in the facades immediately following implementation. Since then, the tears have not increased, either in size or number.
the structure of the aGC Glass Building uses the same principle, but without the use of oor beams, which have been replaced by the use of column-supported at oor plates.the Glaverbel Building was designed in 1963 by the architect Renaat Braem with andré Jacqmain, Pierre Guillissen and Victor mulpas, and was built between 1964 and 1967.this building is one of the most important icons of modernist archi- tecture in Belgium and is also a refer- ence in terms of the construction techniques used.the principle of the free expansion of the structure was suggested by the advisory engineer, Prof. Dr andré Paduart, who founded the Setesco company in 1957. this historical reference is no coincidence, since during his engineering studies at the université libre de Bruxelles (1966-1971), Philippe Samyn was a student of andré Paduart.
